Be a Volunteer Driver

The Schemes have a team of about 30 volunteers covering the whole of the District. About half are based in or around Newark while the rest are in Southwell. Farnsfield, Lowdham and Ollerton. We are always on the lookout for more.

Our volunteers vary with regard to the time they can give to the Schemes. Some are happy to be out every day, whilst others prefer only one or two trips a week. Some have only specific days free whereas others may well be free at any time.

Volunteer Driver

We are happy to accommodate volunteers in any way which suits them.

The Schemes do not expect volunteers to:

  • Fit their lives around the Schemes and will work around other commitments
  • Undertake a job to a particular destination if they prefer not to
  • Undertake a job if they prefer not to for any reason

Volunteers must have:

  • A clean driving license (3 penalty points may be acceptable at the discretion of the organiser)
  • At least 2 years qualified driving experience
  • A roadworthy car, comprehensively insured, and must produce insurance documents and an MOT certificate, if applicable, to support this

As well as the above the following points apply:

  • Potential volunteers must attend an informal interview where the nature of the work will be explained to them
  • Volunteers must complete an application form and provide a passport size photo and the names of two references
  • A history of serious illness must be declared along with any medical condition which may affect a volunteer’s ability to work for the Schemes. If necessary the organiser may ask for a doctor’s letter confirming an applicant’s fitness to drive
  • Any unspent criminal convictions must be declared and volunteers must agree to checks (disclosures) being undertaken through the Criminal Records Bureau
  • Once accepted volunteers must agree to inform the Schemes of any changes in their circumstances especially with regard to health and motoring or other offences

The organiser may terminate a volunteer’s duties if it becomes apparent that relevant information has not been provided either during recruitment or subsequently.

The Schemes will do the following:

  • Contact volunteers on a weekly basis to ascertain their availability for the following week
  • Allocate trips as appropriate
  • Provide volunteers with written details of their trips either by email, fax, post or by hand
  • Pay mileage expenses monthly. Volunteers are expected to hand in their claim forms at the beginning of each month with the number of miles driven and the amount collected from the patient clearly noted
  • Check Insurance Documents, MOT Certificates and Driving Licenses annually
  • Issue newsletters throughout the year and hold two or three social meetings
  • Offer help and support to volunteers at all times
