Social Care Planning for Carers

The 2001 Census identified 83,000 carers in Nottinghamshire and of those 26,000 are providing 20 hours or more of regular and substantial care.

The Nottinghamshire Joint Commissioning Strategy 2009-2010 (Health and County Council) was developed with carers to meet priority areas:

  • Increase numbers of carers offered assessments
  • Better information provided
  • Emergency respite services extended
  • Emergency Card Scheme to be made widely available
  • Increase the number and range of breaks services
  • Specialist dementia services to support carers
  • Support carers in employment
  • GP practices supported to identify carers
  • Support services developed for carers of people at the end of life
  • Increased support for disabled parents to prevent children taking on a caring role
  • Young Carers service developed

The County Council and NHS are keen to involve carers in all stages of service planning and delivery and one way of getting involved is through the Nottinghamshire Carers Advisory Group.
