Newark & Sherwood Health and Wellbeing Alliance

Newark & Sherwood as a district has a strong tradition of working effectively in partnership to improve the health and well-being of its population.

This had been driven through both formal and informal partnerships which have involved the public sector, including health services, the local authorities, the community and voluntary sector and the private sector.

Newark & Sherwood Health and Wellbeing Alliance

The key formal partnership for improving health and well-being in the district is the Health and Well-being Alliance which is a theme group of the Newark & Sherwood Local Strategic Partnership. Membership of the alliance is extensive and it brings together individuals, organisations and groups which all have an interest in improving the health of local communities. The work of the alliance is determined by local health needs and priorities and this is driven through working groups.

Newark & Sherwood Health and Wellbeing Alliance

The Health and Wellbeing Alliance is the main formal partnership for improving health and well-being in the district.

The Alliance is a Theme Group of the Local Strategic Partnership or LSP. The LSP’s Vision is that:

“The District will be within the top 10 rural districts in the East Midlands by 2010 and will be within the top 5 by 2015”

The responsibility of the LSP is to identify and prioritise local needs by involving and consulting both geographical and interest based communities and from this develop, produce, monitor and manage a comprehensive sustainable community plan which all partners contribute to and are committed to.

Membership of the alliance is extensive and it brings together individuals, organisations and groups which all have an interest in improving the health of local communities. The work of the alliance is determined by local health needs and priorities and this is driven through working groups.

What have we done?

During the last 5 years the Alliance has:

  • Established a mechanism for people to discuss health and wellbeing issues important to them and identify where there are gaps in health and wellbeing services and facilities.
  • Considered the Health Profile for Newark and Sherwood and focused work on key areas of the "Choosing Health" agenda in Newark & Sherwood and pulled all work under the Alliance umbrella via 10 working groups to maximise resources and reduce duplication. This became the Health and Wellbeing theme group of the LSP.
  • Held regular consultation/involvement events in communities to determine priority areas of work and feedback on progress.
  • Engaged with local people and workers in the community - statutory, voluntary and community.
  • Developed plans and actions to tackle specific health and wellbeing issues in areas experiencing greater health inequalities and with most need.
  • Allocated Commissioning for Health "Choosing Health" monies to fund partnership projects focused on identified priorities, including a Community Chest to help support health and wellbeing activity and events.
  • Working in partnership the Alliance has been able to support the increase in low level support services and initiatives including:

        -  A Home from Hospital Discharge Scheme
        -  An Information and Resource Centre for patients and carers
        -  A Social Car Scheme
        -  Befriending and Carers Support Scheme
        -  Activity Friends Peer Mentoring Scheme for over 50's
        -  Carer identification and support project
        -  Warm Well and Wise events for older people
        -  Counselling and support for young people
        -  Cooking for Health Recipe Book
        -  Transport to Health survey
        -  Active 4 Life workplace health project
        -  Memories are Made of This Reminiscence Project
        -  Stay Safe Have Fun events and information packs
        -  Traveller Health Ambassador Project
  • Produced and presented a report detailing progress and outcomes to the District Council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee on External Relationships and Partnership.

The Health Improvement priorities for the Alliance are:

  • Contributing to reducing health inequalities by working in the District’s most deprived areas
  • Contributing to reducing smoking prevalence
  • Contributing reducing hospital admissions for alcohol related harm
  • Contributing to improving well being in the population
  • Tackling the rising obesity levels in primary school age children
  • Contributing to a reduction under 18 conception rates
  • Tackling fuel poverty
  • Contributing to Improving the quality of life for vulnerable people

The Alliance priorities focus on those areas in which a joined up partnership approach will have a much greater impact on health improvement than would be achieved if an organisation was working alone. These priorities have been developed from locally determined needs, Choosing Health and the Local Area Agreement. Action to achieve these priorities is delivered through Alliance task groups. These are:

Newark & Sherwood Health and Wellbeing Alliance
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Older People
  • Tackling Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Teenage Pregnancy and Sexual Health
  • Carers
  • Workplace Health
  • Ollerton Health Group

In 2010-11 the Alliance will work with all theme groups of the Local Strategic Partnership on Alcohol issues, working with Vulnerable and Chaotic Families and capacity building the Voluntary Sector.
