Traveller Health Worker

Nickie Anthony has been working with the Gypsy and Traveller community in Newark for the last three years, engaging with the Travelling community and helping to make links with health personnel, to increase access and raise awareness of services available to them.

Nickie Anthony - Traveller Health Worker

Through multi agency working, Nickie has helped to dispel many myths regarding the travelling population, helping agencies to understand the culture and approach things from the appropriate angle. This enables services to reach out to the travelling community giving essential support.

As a community Gypsy and Travellers experience high levels of prejudice and it appears to be ‘ one of the last bastions of prejudice’ in society today. This is something we need to change for the health and wellbeing of this culture.

Positive representation of this culture is the only way forward for community cohesion and for the Gypsy and Traveller community to begin accessing services as the rest of society do, in order to ultimately improve their health outcomes.
