Hospital Visiting Scheme
Details of the scheme for people who:

  • live in the Newark & Sherwood District (all areas)
  • would like to visit a close relative in a hospital or nursing home

What we do?

We have a team of volunteer drivers who use their own cars to take people to visit a close relative in hospital or nursing home.

Close relatives can only be:
  • Partner, parent, son or daughter, brother or sister

Who can use this service?

Residents of Newark & Sherwood, if they are:
  • Unable to access the hospital by public transport because of age or infirmity
  • Unable to access the hospital because there is no public transport operating in their area
  • Without the use of a car – their own or other family members
  • Anyone with a temporary or permanent disability
How much does it cost?

The costs vary depending on the length of the journey:

Some examples of current journey costs:
  • Newark to Newark Hospital – £2.50/3.00
  • Newark to Nottingham - £8.50
  • Southwell to Newark - £4.50
These charges will only apply for the first month. Subsequent trips will be assessed separately These prices are valid until April 2004
How does the scheme work ?

Initial referrals must be made through a GP’s surgery, hospital or health worker.

As funding is limited we are currently only able to offer transport twice a week to visit relatives, although this may be extended under the following circumstances:

  • Imminent death of a relative
  • The total mileage cost is paid by the passenger

Transport can be provided initially for one month only. Any case involving long term care will be considered separately.

The scheme is only available to residents of Newark & Sherwood who wish to visit relatives either within Newark & Sherwood District, or they wish to visit relatives outside Nottinghamshire (within reason).

All passengers do receive individual care and attention from the driver, but if they choose to, may bring their own escort with them. Patients requiring a wheelchair are requested to bring an escort to handle the wheelchair. No charge will be made for the escort. Please note we do not supply wheelchairs.
