Supporting involvement in Health and Social Care

The Government has always looked at ways that people using health and social services can give their views about the services they receive and have a say in the development of new services.  They have modernised the consultation methods connected to health and social services and want to promote wider involvement from patients, service users, carers, voluntary and community groups and members of the public. The CVS District Partnership Officer can help make this happen.

The Community Health Council (CHC) has been dissolved and in its place are a number of initiatives designed to resolve problems, support people wishing to make a complaint and get views about health services across to NHS Managers; PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Services), ICAS (Independent Complaints Advisory Service) PPI Forums (Patient and Public Involvement Forums).

The main role of the District Partnership Officer is to help voluntary groups, carers and users of health and social services, in Newark and Sherwood and across Nottinghamshire, to become involved in these consultation processes and so help to influence and change the way local services are planned and delivered.

You might be particularly interested in becoming involved in the planning of health and social services if your voluntary or community group has a focus on health and social care issues, or provide services or support.  Or you might be a carer of an elderly relative, or someone with a disability.  Or you might be a user of health or social services.

Newark and Sherwood Partnership

In 2000, the Local Government Act put a duty on local authorities in England and Wales to prepare Community Strategies for their particular areas. It was decided that these strategies should be prepared and implemented by Local Strategic Partnerships.

Local Strategic Partnerships are a means of developing new ways of working that will involve local people in how public services are provided. They should bring together a wide range of people to work effectively in partnership on a range of key issues including housing and the environment, education, crime, employment and health. It is very important that Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) should strengthen the connection with and between public sector agencies, local government, the voluntary and community sectors, businesses and local residents. This joint working is needed to find ways to –

  • Improve all public services, renew deprived areas, develop strong sustainable economies and healthy, safe communities.

  • Focus service delivery from the outset on the needs and aspirations of local people, including those who are traditionally excluded.

  • Find ways to encourage people to be constructively involved in their communities.

  • Ensure sustainable development in the local area and contribute to the regional sustainable development agenda.

The LSP in Newark and Sherwood is the Newark and Sherwood Partnership. It is made up of statutory, public and private, voluntary and community organisations in the area. The Partnership is coordinated by a Hub of main partners and has seven Issue Groups, Community Safety, Culture, Environment, Economic Development and Transport, Health and Social Care, Lifelong Learning and Information and Social inclusion. These groups have regular meetings throughout the District which anyone is welcome to attend.

The Partnership has produced a Community Plan which can be viewed by clicking here.

Social Inclusion Issue Group

The CVS chairs the Social Inclusion Issue Group. So far the group has contributed to the Sustainability and Social Inclusion Checklist and played a major part in supporting the development of the Community and Voluntary Sector Forum. The group also supports a Housing Sub Group. Meetings are held four times a year and are open to all. For more details contact Julia Hughes, CVS Manager.
