Transport to Health
Details of the scheme for people who:

  • live in a rural area of Newark & Sherwood District
  • have an appointment to visit their doctor, chiropodist, physiotherapist, dentist, podiatrist, or optician

The Transport to Health scheme started in June 2000 to enable that people living in the more rural areas of Newark and Sherwood District, access to all the healthcare facilities that they need.

What we do?

We have a team of volunteer drivers who use their own cars to take patients from rural areas to appointments with doctors, chiropodists, physiotherapists, dentists, podiatrists, and opticians.

Please note this service is not available to residents in Newark, Farndon or Balderton.
Who can use this service?

The following people are eligible as long as they do not have easy access to alternative transport:
  • Those over 60 years
  • Those under 16 years
  • Anyone with a temporary or permanent disability
How much does it cost?

The current charges are:
  • Trips to a surgery within your village - £1.50
  • Trips to a surgery in a different village – £2.50
  • Trips further afield will be charged according to mileage
These charges are valid to April 2004
How does the scheme work ?

Patients must make their first booking through their GP, Surgery, Health Visitor, Social Worker or Warden to confirm their eligibility. Any subsequent bookings can be made directly with the Co-ordinator of the Transport to Health Scheme.

To book a driver for any appointments, at least 48 hours notice should be given if possible.

Patients will be told what time they are to be collected by their volunteer driver, and they will usually be informed who their driver will be. The driver will take the patient for their appointment, offer any assistance where necessary, and return the patient to their home after the appointment.

All passengers do receive individual care and attention from the driver, but if they choose to, may bring their own escort with them. Patients requiring a wheelchair are requested to bring an escort to handle the wheelchair. A small charge will be made for the escort, to help towards transport costs. Please note – we do not provide wheelchairs.

Patients can use the scheme to attend appointments both within Nottinghamshire and outside Nottinghamshire.
