    Making Memories Befriending Service

    News Release

     Wednesday 19th October 2016

Making Memories Befriending Project – Live Well with dementia

The Making Memories Befriending Service supports people with dementia and other / undiagnosed memory problems and their carers so that people can live well with Dementia and Memory problems. Trained volunteer befrienders can support service users to try new activities or to continue hobbies that they have always enjoyed, but now find more difficult.

Amy Dementia information Worker at CVS said “The aim of our Making Memories service is to allow people to ‘live well with dementia’. Our team of trained volunteers will help them to continue with their day to day lives, their interests and activities for as long as possible. The better the quality of life and the happier people are is good for their wellbeing and health in general.”

The service will match volunteer befrienders with service users who have similar interests so that they can take part together; this may involve taking part in physical activities within the community such as walking & swimming or attending a group; it may even mean just having a coffee and a chat – doing the things we all enjoy. Volunteers will also visit service users in their own homes. The service will provide carers with some free time to do the things they want.

A weekly Activities Group will provide people with Dementia or memory problems and their Carers an opportunity to take part in activities and receive information on a variety of topics such as: exercise, nutrition, local services etc.

Madeleine O’Sullivan Chief Executive said “At a time when services are being cut and funding is scarce we are thrilled to have received funding from the Big Lottery Fund to assist us in providing this much needed service, which will benefit both those with dementia and their carers.”
